London Eye

Wednesday, 29 August 2007

This afternoon a classmate and I decided to take a trip on the London Eye. It was another perfect day and you never know how many of those are left before it rains again. The views were pretty spectacular. Photography was kind of tough with that pesky glass in the way, but I did my best.

We wandered around the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey cloister afterwards, enjoying a bit of picture taking. Once our feet were all worn out, we found a nice place to eat near Piccadilly Circus.

As for the statue at Piccadilly Circus (this is for you, Aaron) - according to my handy guidebook, it is not a statute of Eros, the God of Love, but of the Angel of Christian Charity. It was unveiled in 1893 and dedicated to philanthropist and social reformer, Lord Shaftesbury. Apparently, it has been mistaken for Eros so much, that the misnomer has stuck. In any case, it's quite lacking in grandiosity, unlike everything else in this town
